Text: Calculus Volume 1, James Stewart
Syllabus: We will cover Chapters 1-4 of the textbook. A pdf version of the syllabus may be found here.

Grading
  • Homework: Homework assignments will be due at the beginning of class just about every MWF. Assignments will be listed below. No late homework will be accepted but the lowest three homework scores will be dropped. Homework is 20% of your grade. See an e-mail on November 2 at about 1:20 for a policy change regarding homework.
  • Maple: Many Tuesdays we will use a computer software package called Maple. Worksheets from these classes will be due by 11:59 PM the following Sunday and will be worth 8% of your grade.See an e-mail on November 2 at about 1:20 for a policy change regarding Maple worksheets and Tuesday attendance.
  • Exams: There will be three in-class exams on September 14, October 19, and November 16. Your lowest score will be 10% of your final grade and the other two exams will be 19% each.
  • Final: There will be a final which will count for 24% of your grade. The final exam for both sections is Monday, December 13. The 8:30 AM section will have their final from 8:00 - 10:30 AM and the 12:30 PM section will have their final from 1:30 - 4:00 PM. Do not make plans to go home early.

  • Some notes
  • Your final grade in this course will reflect your performance throughout the whole semester. Except for a possible bonus question on the exams, there will be no extra credit and you cannot retake an exam nor redo homework.
  • Make sure you are familiar with the Academic Integrity Code. Any violations of it will result in an automatic zero for that assignment or exam.
  • I encourage you to work together to solve homework problems and Maple worksheets but everyone must write their own solutions. Any copied problems on these assignments will result in a zero for the whole assignment.
  • You are expected to attend every class and you are responsible for all material presented and changes announced during class. It is considered proper etiquette to let your professors know ahead of time if you must miss a class. Freshmen are required to have excused absences approved by the Dean's office.
  • No makeup exams will be given unless agreed to beforehand.
  • Cell phone usage is strictly prohibited during class. Computers are required for Maple days (most Tuesdays) but prohibited on other days.
  • Any student with a disability who needs special accommodations or other assistance in this course should make an appointment to speak with me as soon as possible.

  • Getting Help
  • Work together with others in the class.
  • Come to my office hours with questions about material, assignments, or general questions about the course or your grade.
  • The MLRC (Mathematics Learning Resource Center) has tutors available Sunday through Thursday evenings and Monday through Thursday afternoons.

  • Unsolicited Advice
  • Exam problems will not necessarily be exactly like the homework problems. Understanding why we solve a problem in a certain way will probably result in a better grade than simply trying to mimic what we have previously done.
  • Think of math a bit like learning how to bowl. You can have someone explain to you how to throw the ball and how to put spin on it to make it hit the pins but chances are the first time you throw the bowling ball, you will throw a gutter ball. How do you improve at bowling? You practice. Same thing is true in math. The best way to learn math is to practice, practice, practice.
  • Work together when you can.
  • If you are struggling, come to see me early. If you wait until a week before the final, there isn't much that can be done to help you.

  • Homework

Homework assignments are due at the beginning of the class date listed below. If you work with others on the homework, list their names at the top of the page. Put a star next to any problems for which you received help at the MLRC. This is purely for bookkeeping purposes and will not affect your score whatsoever.
You can find a pdf file with graphs of the basic functions for the class here.

    Accessing Maple

  • General overview of how to use Maple is here: (although we now have version 14 of Maple)
              http://www.villanova.edu/artsci/mathematics/resources/maple/using/index.htm

  • Detailed instructions on how to download Maple to your own computer are here:
              http://www.villanova.edu/artsci/mathematics/resources/maple/

  • The Math Learning Resource Center (MLRC) has computers which run Maple.

  • Our Worksheets

Weekly worksheets will be posted on our class WebCT page in a folder called "Maple Worksheets."

You will first download and save the worksheet to your own computer. There will be a series of questions and editing you will need to do on the worksheet. Any answers that require more than a numeric answer should be written in complete, coherent sentences.

When you are finished with the worksheet, save it on your computer as "m*lastname_firstname.mw" where * is the number of the assignment. So, for instance, for the first assignment I would save my worksheet as "m1paulhus_jennifer.mw."

Finally, upload it to WebCT. From our course page, find the appropriate assignment from the "Assignment" tab on the left. Click on the name of the assignment and under "Submission" click "Add Attachments." Select the file you want to upload from your local computer.

I will grade the files electronically and return them with comments and corrections.

      The Worksheets
    1. Introduction to Functions and Graphing
    2. Transformation of Graphs
    3. Inverse Functions
    4. Limits
    5. Derivatives as Rate of Change
    6. The Ant and the Blade of Grass (from: CalcLabs with Maple for Stewart's Single Variable Calculus, Yasskin, et al. )
    7. Rates of Change in Applications
    8. Linear Approximations
    9. Hyperbolic Functions
    10. Newton's Method

    Exams

Exams will be given in-class on the three Tuesdays mentioned above. You will be allowed only an (optional) scientific calculator with no memory storage on exams. No cell phone calculators or graphing calculators will be allowed. The department has calculators that may be purchased for about $8.00, cash only. If you would like to purchase one of these please let me know by Wednesday, September 1.
